Names Change – Technology Advances

Call it Industrie 4.0, call it Iiot either way B&W MEGTEC has been connecting and monitoring equipment through all the technology advances over the years. As Klaus Schwab outlined in his book, “The Fourth Industrial Revolution,” technology today allows companies to provide more accurate troubleshooting support and proactive planning for preventative maintenance. B&W MEGTEC provides cost-effective methods of electronic monitoring regulatory and equipment operational data. The B&W MEGTEC EnviroMonitor™ is a cost-effective system that electronically monitors regulatory or other data points in an encrypted format, allowing for regulatory approved reports. And the B&W MEGTEC ProcessMonitor™ is a data acquisition and reporting system that provides secure, managed remote RTO/RCO monitoring and support to observe, store and report equipment operational data. Both systems help maximize day-to-day operations.
The B&W MEGTEC ProcessMonitor™ data acquisition and reporting system provides secure, managed remote RTO/RCO monitoring and support to observe, store and report equipment operational data. The system is comprised of a network address translation (NAT) router with a built-in firewall, a PLC connection, and an Ethernet-based communication port which allows VPN access. The ProcessMonitor™ system has an option to continually collect data for regular analysis and reporting. An additional feature is the remote dashboard that can be used to view machine operation.

Powering Up

B&W MEGTEC is helping power-up lithium-ion battery electrode manufacturing with simultaneous two-sided coating. The benefits of this process include twice the throughput compared to single-side coaters; the need for only one pass through the dryer delivers equal drying of both coated sides; a smaller overall manufacturing footprint compared to tandem lines; and lower capital and operating costs compared to tandem coating lines. Battery Electrode Coated Foil

B&W MEGTEC provides service agreements for the ongoing support of the process lines.   These service agreements include remote monitoring, data collection and analysis along with quarterly and yearly preventative maintenance.

The goals of the annual maintenance contract are to maximize the availability of your Li-Ion equipment, provide training opportunities, identify area of improvement, and ensure the equipment is being maintained per manufacturer’s recommendations.

Tracking the running conditions against original base line setting and engineering expectations keep the equipment running at top efficiency.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIot) At B&W MEGTEC

Connectivity is everywhere we look.   The buzz word of Industrial Internet of Thing (IIoT) and 4.0 are in every new article we pick up.  Even at home we now have an APP to alert us when our garage door opener is operated or if the freezer is getting too warm.   At B&W MEGTEC  http://www.babcock.com/en/megtec/services-support we are providing tools to proactively collect data and using preprogrammed alerts notify users of equipment that needs attention.  Using the B&W MEGTEC EnviroMonitor or the ProcessMonitor customers are able to increase the efficiency of their equipment.   In addition these tools provide automated report generation reducing the time it takes to provide corporate and government reports.

Technology is at our door step and available at a competitive price.  How do we embrace this technology to most effectively and wisely apply it to our equipment?    Sensor strategically mounted throughout the equipment provide information on the thermodynamic characteristics of the equipment and can compare base line operating information to current conditions and alert on degradation of operation.    B&W MEGTEC works to using existing sensor and tools to reduce the cost of implementing a remote monitoring solution.   The B&W MEGTEC Preventative Maintenance Group then uses the historical data to and running data to plan the most efficient use of the annual service and practically manage which components need to be updated each year.

IIot technology allows preflight information to be collected to plan for service events prior to shutting down crucial equipment and allowing for a greater amount of uptime throughout the year.

Machine to Machine (M2M) benefits

Connecting equipment to the “Internet of Things” can be beneficial to provide proactive monitoring of equipment and process improvement analysis.
Building confidence with customer IT departments seems to be the uphill battle these days.
The goal at MEGTEC is provide a short term ROI on applying the technology in concert with providing a secure solution. Having the MEGTEC RTO or Oven connected  to the Enviromonitor provides strong proactive opportunities.  Having the ability to have corporate notification of problems automatically provides another level of protection from compliance issues.

Field Service 2014 – Customer Support

Last week at the Field Service 2014 conference I spoke about customer support.  Today we are offered many ideas and solutions for improving our customer service.  There are many good programs that can be plugged into your business.  But do the meet your needs?  Do they meet your customer’s needs?

I also shared a quote by industry Executive Rick Nichols; “Customers today tell us they need a focus on simple, easy to use and cost effective technology supported by world class aftermarket services.  “Where their products are manufactured is now less important than how quickly they can access the service and engineering support for them once they are built.”

Is this true?  Is our aftermarket support the primary measure of our industrial equipment selection?   How do we measure up?

Some thoughts on how we support our customers:

I spoke about the need of a customer focus being company wide, that all departments from accounting and engineering through to shipping and customer service need to keep the customer need in mind.

We also spoke on the importance of communications forms, research suggests that words are only 7% of communications, that our tone is 37% and body language can be as much as 56% of the communication.   So how much communication is really being done in a blog like this when we write an email?

What is your experience?
